History

Harper & Sons, Inc. history runs deep in the roots of the Eastern Shore. The company was founded in 1968 by Howard G. Harper in Easton, MD. Mr. Harper had entered the construction business as a general manager of contractor sales for the ES Adkins Company Lumberyard. He started Howard G. Harper Contracting as a way for him and his three sons to meet the construction needs of the rapidly developing Eastern Shore.

In 1977, Howard purchased Eley Lumber and Construction Company in Queen Anne, MD as an addition to the Harper & Sons growing workforce, and in 1978 the Howard G. Harper Contracting became Harper & Sons, Inc. In 1982, Stephen H. Harper, the oldest son of Howard, became the principal owner of the Harper & Sons and began an earnest quest to build his father’s legacy into the diverse and capable company that it is today. The company’s focus during its early years was in small residential and commercial projects, and in the late 1980’s and early 1990’s Harper & Sons used their experience to focus on larger and more complicated projects. The company went from building single homes and offices to completing entire developments, renovating public schools, and building large commercial, institutional, and agricultural structures.

As the company approaches its fourth decade of business, the third generation of the Harper family is continuing the legacy of quality construction in the presence of Stephen’s three sons. Today, the Harper & Sons team considers the company to be an expert in handling complex commercial, institutional, and school projects. Harper & Sons has completed numerous projects for private and public owners in the past decate, including the State of Maryland, Washington College, Talbot County Board of Education, Caroline County Board of Education, Talbot County YMCA, and Talbot County Hospice.

  Experience and Capabilities

Harper & Sons clients benefit from the seasoned and dedicated staff of construction professionals with decades of experience in a wide range of project types and sizes across the Eastern Shore of Maryland and Delaware. The Harper & Sons staff's wealth of management knowledge enables them to give each client's project—large or small—-personal attention needed to ensure that the client is pleased with the finished building—down to the smallest details. To assist in this pursuit of quality, Harper & Sons maintains a staff of skilled tradesmen capable of performing a variety of general construction tasks from masonry to fine carpentry. Harper & Sons has also assembled a team of highly-qualified subcontractors who excel in performing large, complicated, or fast-tracked construction, as well as specialty renovations and additions.

Harper & Sons seeks the most competitive and qualified local subcontractors and suppliers with the operational and financial capacity to successfully perform on each project, and specializes in "right-sizing" the subcontractors for individual projects so that the owner receives the best value at the best possible price.

  Teamwork

Harper & Sons employees—whether related or not—are all treated like family, with long-term employment being the standard at Harper & Sons, and not the exception. This level of commitment and responsibility is engrained at all levels of the company. The result is a close-knit team dedicated to cooperation with—and exceeding the expectations of—all members of the project team, from clients to subcontractors.

  Bonding

Harper and Sons has a capability of securing bonding for large construction projects through the top-rated Hartford Bonding Company. Harper and Sons has been bonded on single construction projects as large as $10 million and for several simultaneous projects with combined values exceeding $15 million.

  The Harper Advantage

Harper & Sons unique approach to quality over quantity means that top management becomes involved in each project and assures a level of personal responsibility and attention to critical details not commonly found in the construction industry.

Every employee at Harper & Sons is immersed in the pursuit of quality so that at the conclusion of each project, builder AND owner can be equally proud of what has been accomplished. This means that project managers continuously verify critical measurements and tradesmen take the extra care to produce a superior product; while upper management at Harper & Sons personally review each project and jobsite. In addition, during the entire construction project, Harper & Sons pays close attention to material specifications that may affect the availability of building products, site logistics, and local labor resources.

Finally, and most importantly, we at Harper & Sons are committed to maintaining a positive local company image and building quality projects for our clients.
